Your first driving lesson is a big step, and a little preparation makes it much easier. Here is everything our lady instructors wish every new student knew before day one.
Before the lesson
- Wear comfortable shoes. Flat shoes with thin soles let you feel the pedals. Avoid heels, loose slippers or khussas that can slip off.
- Choose easy clothing. Anything that lets you move your arms and look over your shoulder comfortably. Keep your dupatta secured so it does not get in the way of the steering wheel.
- Bring your CNIC. Keep a copy of your CNIC and, if you have one, your learner permit. It is useful from the start.
- Eat something light. Driving on an empty stomach can make you feel shaky. A light snack and some water help you focus.
- Sleep well. A rested mind reacts faster and stays calmer.
What happens in lesson one
You will not be thrown into traffic. A typical first lesson covers:
- Adjusting the seat, mirrors and seat belt correctly
- Getting to know the pedals, steering, indicators and gear lever
- Starting the car, moving off slowly and stopping smoothly
- Gentle steering practice on a quiet road
During the lesson
- Ask every question. There is no silly question. Good instructors love curious students.
- Go slowly. Speed comes later. Smooth control comes first.
- Expect to make mistakes. Stalling, braking too hard or turning wide are all normal in week one.
- Review afterwards. Spend two minutes after each lesson thinking about what went well and what to try next time.
